கே.பி.'என அழைக்கப்படும் கே.பாலச்சந்தர் திரையில் நடத்தும் திரைக்கதை திருவிளையாடல்களை பெரிதும் ரசிப்பார்கள் தமிழர்கள்.

ஆனால்... தமிழர்களைக் குறிவைத்து திரைமறைவில் சிங்கள அரசு நடத்தும் திரைக்கதைகளுக்கு பெரிதும் உடந்தையாகிவருகிறார் முன்னாள் 'புலி'யான கே.பி. என்கிற குமரன் பத்மநாதன்.

அதன் ஒரு நகர்வுதான் பழ.நெடுமாறன், வைகோ, மகேந்திரன் (எந்த மகேந்திரன் என்பதை பெட்டிச் செய்தியில் காண்க) ஆகியோரைத் தொடர்புபடுத்தி இலங்கைப் பத்திரிகைக்கு அவர் கொடுத்திருக்கும் பேட்டியும், அது தொடர்பாக தமிழகத்தில் கிளர்ந்திருக்கும் அதிர்வலைகளும்!

' '2009ல் இறுதி கட்ட போரின் போது இந்திய அரசு போர் நிறுத்தத்துக்கான முயற்சிகளில் ஈடுபட்டது. ஆனால், வைகோ, நெடுமாறன் போன்றவர்கள் தங்கள் அரசியல் லாபத்துக்காக புலிகளுக்குத் தவறான ஆலோசனைகளைச் சொல்லி போர் நிறுத்தம் ஏற்படாமல் செய்துவிட்டார்கள்'' என்பதுதான் இலங்கைப் பத்திரிகையான 'டெய்லி மிரர்'க்கு கே.பி. கொடுத்திருக்கும் பேட்டி.

இதற்கு பழ.நெடுமாறன், வைகோ, மகேந்திரன் எம்.எல்.ஏ. போன்றோர் கடும் மறுப்பு தெரிவித்திருக்க... கலைஞரோ, கே.பி.யின் பேட்டி என வந்திருக்கும் அந்த பகுதியை அப்படியே எடுத்து முரசொலியில் பிரசுரித்து, இதுபற்றி கே.பி. உண்மைகளை விளக்கவேண்டும் என கூறியிருக்கிறார்.

இந்த நிலையில்... கே.பி.யின் பெயரிலான இந்தப் பேட்டி பற்றியும், அதன் பின்னணி பற்றியும் ஈழத்துத் தமிழ் நண்பர்களிடம் பேசினோம்.

''மிகத் தெளிவாக ஒன்றைப் புரிந்துகொள்ளவேண்டும் கே.பி. இப்போது ஒரு கைதி. சிங்கள அரசின் விருந்தாளியாக அவர் மாறிப்போயிருந்த போதிலும் இன்னமும் அவர் ஒரு கைதிதான்.

சிறையில் இருக்கும் கைதிகள் தங்கள் உறவினர்களுக்குக் கடிதம் எழுதினால் கூட, அதை சிறை கண்காணிப்பாளர் படித்துப் பார்த்து தணிக்கை செய்து சீல் வைத்துதான் அந்தக் கடிதத்தை அனுப்புவார்கள். சாதாரண கைதிக்கே இந்த நிலை என்றால், விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் முக்கியப் பிரமுகர் என குற்றம்சாட்டி சிங்கள அரசால் கைது செய்யப்பட்ட கே.பி. சுமார் பதினைந்து புலனாய்வு அதிகாரிகள் புடை சூழ கோத்தபய ராஜபக்ஷேவின் நேரடிக் கண்காணிப்பில் சிறைவைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறார். அவர் கொடுக்கும் பேட்டி எத்தகையதாக இருக்கும் என்பதை சொல்லியா தெரியவேண்டும்? ஆனால் கலைஞரோ கே.பி.யிடம் மேலும் சொல்லுங்கள் என கேட்கிறார்.

மேலும், இதே கே.பி.யை, பேட்டி எடுக்க 'வலம்புரி' உட்பட சில பத்திரிகைகளிலிருந்து பல நாட்களாக முயன்றுகொண்டிருந்தனர். ஆனால், அவர்களுக்கெல்லாம், 'கேட்டுத்தான் சொல்லணும்' என்றே பதிலளித்த கே.பி... தனது 'நம்பிக்கைக்குரிய' டி.பி.எஸ்.ஜெயராஜ் மூலமாக டெய்லி மிரர் பத்திரிகையில் இந்த பேட்டியை அளித்திருக்கிறார். இதிலிருந்தே தெரிகிறது...'கேட்டுத்தான் சொல்லணும்' என யாரைச் சொன்னாரோ அந்த கோத்தபய வகையறாக்களின் அனுமதிக்குப் பிறகே இப்படி ஒரு பேட்டியை அளித்திருக்கிறார்.

இந்த நிலையில் டி.பி.எஸ்.ஜெயராஜைப் பற்றியும் இங்கே சொல்லி-யாகவேண்டும். இவர் தொடர்ந்து ஈழப் போராட்டங்களுக்கு எதிராக செயல்படுகிறார் என்ற கோபத்தில், கனடாவில் உள்ள ஈழத் தமிழர்கள் இவரைத் தாக்கி காலை உடைத்தனர். இதற்குக் காரணம் விடுதலைப் புலிகள்தான் என கருதி புலிகளை கடுமையாக எதிர்க்க ஆரம்பித்தவர் அவர். பின்னாட்களில் நாடு கடந்த தமிழீழ அரசு அமைக்கப்பட்டபோது, டி.பி.எஸ்.ஜெயராஜுக்கு முக்கிய பதவி கொடுத்தார் கே.பி. இதற்கு கடும் எதிர்ப்பு கிளம்பியபோது, 'எல்லாரையும் அரவணைத்துச் செல்லவேண்டும்' என்று பதில் சொன்னார். ஆனால், சிங்களனையும் அரவணைத்துச் செல்லப் போகிறார் என்பது போகப்போகத்தான் தெரிய ஆரம்பித்தது.

இப்பேர்ப்பட்ட ஜெயராஜ்தான் கோத்தபய ராஜபக்ஷேவின் நேரடிக் கண்காணிப்பில் இருக்கும் கே.பி.யிடம் பேட்டி எடுத்திருக்கிறார். இதிலிருந்தே தெரியவில்லையா? இந்த பேட்டி முற்றிலுமான சிங்களத் தந்திரத்தின் வெளிப்பாடு என்பது?'' என நம்மைக் கேட்ட அவர்கள், இந்த பேட்டியின் பின்னணி பற்றியும் பேசினார்கள்.

''புலிகள் இயக்கம் 2009-ல் சிங்களத் தந்திரத்தால் தற்காலிகமாக வீழ்த்தப்பட்டதும், பிரபாகரன் இருக்கிறார் என்றும் வீரமரணம் அடைந்துவிட்டார் என்றும் மூன்று நாட்களுக்குள் முழுதாக புரண்டு பேசியவர்தான் கே.பி. அப்போதே இவர் சிங்கள-இந்திய உளவுத் துறைகளின் பிடியில் சிக்கிவிட்டாரோ என்ற விமர்சனங்கள் எழுந்தன.

ஆனால் அதன்பின் நாடு கடந்த தமிழீழ அரசு என்ற குரல்கள் புலம்பெயர் தமிழர்களிடமிருந்து வெளிப்பட்டபோது அதன் தலைவராக தன்னை அறிவித்துக்கொண்டார் கே.பி. மலேசியாவில் சிங்களப் புலனாய்வுத் துறையினரால் கே.பி. கைது செய்யப்பட்டபோது, 'இது புலிகளின் ராஜதந்திர நகர்வுகளாக இருக்கலாம்' என்றும் புலம்பெயர் தமிழர்கள் கருதினர்.

ஆனால், கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக கே.பி.யின் சாயம் வெளுக்கத் தொடங்கியது.

புலிகளின் பெருமதியான நிதி பற்றிய தகவல்கள் கே.பி.வசம் இருந்ததால் அவரை தனது விருந்தாளியாக ஆக்கி அழகு பார்க்க ஆரம்பித்துவிட்டது சிங்கள அரசு. இந்த நிலையில், ஈழத்தில் உள்ள தமிழர்கள் நன்றாக இருப்பதாகவும்... அதை கே.பி. தலைமையிலான குழு பார்வையிட்டதாகவும் தகவல்கள் வந்தன. இதில் கே.பி.யோடு போனவர்களின் பேட்டிகளை வெளியிட்டு, 'கே.பி. சிங்களனின் முழு ஊழி-யனாகிவிட்டார்' என்பதை இணைய ஊடகங்கள் அம்பலப்-படுத்தின.

புலிகளின் வீழ்ச்சிக்குப் பிறகு புலம்பெயர் நாடுகளில் கிளர்ந்து எழுந்த தமிழர்களின் போராட்டத்தை சிதைக்கச் செய்வதற்காக, கே.பி.யை சிங்கள அரசு பயன்படுத்தி வருவதை புலம்பெயர் தமிழர்கள் உணர்ந்துவிட்டனர். இதனால் கே.பி.யை அவர்கள் முற்றாக நிராகரித்துவிட்டனர். கே.பி.யை மையப்படுத்திய சிங்களத் தந்திரங்கள் புலம்பெயர் நாடுகளில் தவிடுபொடியான பிறகுதான் இப்போது தமிழ்நாட்டுத் தமிழர்களை நோக்கி திரும்பியிருக்கிறது உளவுத் துறை கூட்டணி. அதுதான் கே.பி.யின் வைகோ மீதான தாக்குதல் பேட்டி'' என சொல்லி வியப்பை ஏற்படுத்தினர்.

''தமிழகத்தை நோக்கி சிங்கள உளவுத் துறை கூட்டணியா?'' என்று நாம் கேட்க,

''உச்சகட்ட போர் நடந்த காலகட்டங்களில் தமிழகத்தில் கிளர்ந்த உணர்வுகளையும், போராட்டங்களையும் தமிழக அரசு உதவியுடன் மத்திய அரசு அடக்கியது. அப்படியுமே கடந்த நாடாளுமன்றத் தேர்தலில் தி.மு.க.-காங்கிரஸ் கூட்டணியில் பல காங்கிரஸ் தலைகள் உருண்டன.

விரைவில் தமிழக சட்டமன்றத் தேர்தல் வர இருக்கும் நிலையில் மீண்டும் ஈழத்தை மையமாக வைத்து ஓர் எழுச்சி தமிழகத்தில் எழுந்துவிடக் கூடாது என்பதில் கவனமாக இருக்கிறது சிங்கள அரசு. அப்படி ஒரு அசமந்தமான சூழலை தமிழகத்தில் ஏற்படுத்த வேண்டுமானால், இப்போது உள்ள மாதிரி ஈழ விவகாரத்தில் 'சவசவ' போக்கைக் கையாளக் கூடிய தி.மு.க. அரசே தொடரவேண்டும் என்பதுதான் சிங்கள உளவுத் துறையின் திட்டம். இதற்காகத்தான் ஈழ எழுச்சியில் பங்கு வகித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் நெடுமாறன், வைகோ போன்றவர்களை இழிவுபடுத்தும் வேலையில் இறங்கியிருக்கிறார்கள்.

ஆக... வரும் சட்டமன்றத் தேர்தலில் தனக்கு சாதகமான இதே போன்ற ஆட்சியே தொடர சிங்கள உளவுத்துறையின் சதிதான் இந்த கே.பி. பேட்டி. இது மட்டுமல்ல... அடுத்து சிங்கள உளவுத் துறையின் தாக்குதலுக்கு 'நாம் தமிழர்' ஒருங்கிணப்பாளர் சீமான் போன்றவர்களும் ஆளாகக் கூடும்'' என்று முடித்தார்கள்.

கொழும்பு தட்பவெப்பம் அறிந்த மேலும் சிலரோ, ''கே.பி. பேட்டி மூலம் மட்டுமல்ல... தமிழகத்தில் தங்களுக்கு சாதகமான ஊடகங்கள் மூலம் மேலும் சில தகவல்களையும் பரப்ப திட்டமிட்டு வருகிறது சிங்கள உளவுத்துறை. அதில் முக்கியமாக.... போர் பற்றி விசாரிக்க சிங்கள அரசால் அமைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் குழுவிடம் 'பிரபாகரன் மரணம் & 2' என்ற வீடியோ காட்சிகளை ஒப்படைத்திருக்கிறது கோத்தபய டீம். அதாவது பிரபாகரன் மரணத்தை மேலும் உறுதிப்படுத்துவது போன்ற சில காட்சிகள் அடங்கிய இந்த வீடியோவை சில மீடியாக்கள் மூலம் கசியவிட்டு... பிரபாகரன் இறந்துவிட்டார் என்று உறுதியாக தமிழகத்தை நம்பவைப்பதுதான் கோத்த-பயவின் அடுத்த திட்டம். அதனால் பிரபாகரன் பற்றி சிங்கள அரசின் அடுத்த சி.டி.யை விரைவிலேயே எதிர்பார்க்கலாம். அதனால் தமிழ்நாட்டு மக்கள் சிங்கள உளவுத் துறையினரிடமும் அவர்களின் திட்டத்தை இங்கே அரங்கேற்றுபவர்களிடமும் ஜாக்கிரதையாக இருக்கவேண்டும்'' என எச்சரித்துச் சொல்கிறார்கள்.

Qn: What are the thumb rules for a layman to take care of his heart?

Ans:
1. Diet – Less of carbohydrate, more of protein, less oil
2. Exercise – Half an hour's walk, at least five days a week; avoid lifts and avoid sitting for a longtime
3. Quit smoking
4. Control weight
5. Control blood pressure and sugar

Qn: Is eating non-veg food (fish) good for the heart?

Ans: No

Qn: It's still a grave shock to hear that some apparently healthy person
gets a cardiac arrest. How do we understand it in perspective?

Ans: This is called silent attack; that is why we recommend everyone past the age of 30 to undergo routine health checkups.

Qn: Are heart diseases hereditary?

Ans: Yes

Qn: What are the ways in which the heart is stressed? What practices do you suggest to de-stress?

Ans: Change your attitude towards life. Do not look for perfection in everything in life.

Qn: Is walking better than jogging or is more intensive exercise required to keep a healthy heart?

Ans: Walking is better than jogging since jogging leads to early fatigue and injury to joints

Qn: You have done so much for the poor and needy. What has inspired you to do so?

Ans: Mother Theresa , who was my patient

Qn: Can people with low blood pressure suffer heart diseases?

Ans: Extremely rare

Qn: Does cholesterol accumulates right from an early age
(I'm currently only 22) or do you have to worry about it only after you are above 30 years of age?

Ans: Cholesterol accumulates from childhood.

Qn: How do irregular eating habits affect the heart ?

Ans: You tend to eat junk food when the habits are irregular and your body's enzyme release for digestion gets confused.

Qn: How can I control cholesterol content without using medicines?

Ans: Control diet, walk and eat walnut.

Qn: Can yoga prevent heart ailments?

Ans: Yoga helps.

Qn: Which is the best and worst food for the heart?

Ans: Fruits and vegetables are the best and the worst is oil.

Qn: Which oil is better – groundnut, sunflower, olive?

Ans: All oils are bad .

Qn: What is the routine checkup one should go through? Is there any specific test?

Ans: Routine blood test to ensure sugar, cholesterol is ok. Check BP, Treadmill test after an echo.

Qn: What are the first aid steps to be taken on a heart attack?

Ans: Help the person into a sleeping position , place an aspirin tablet under the tongue with a sorbitrate tablet if available, and rush him to a coronary care unit since the maximum casualty takes place within the first hour.

Qn: How do you differentiate between pain caused by a heart attack and that caused due to gastric trouble?

Ans: Extremely difficult without ECG.

Qn: What is the main cause of a steep increase in heart problems amongst youngsters? I see people of about 30-40 yrs of age having heart attacks and serious heart problems.

Ans: Increased awareness has increased incidents. Also, sedentary lifestyles, smoking, junk food, lack of exercise in a country where people are genetically three times more vulnerable for heart attacks than Europeans and Americans.

Qn: Is it possible for a person to have BP outside the normal range of 120/80 and yet be perfectly healthy?

Ans: Yes.

Qn: Marriages within close relatives can lead to heart problems for the child. Is it true?

Ans : Yes, co-sanguinity leads to congenital abnormalities and you may not have a software engineer as a child

Qn: Many of us have an irregular daily routine and many a times we have to stay late nights in office. Does this affect our heart ? What precautions would you recommend?

Ans : When you are young, nature protects you against all these irregularities. However, as you grow older, respect the biological clock.

Qn: Will taking anti-hypertensive drugs cause some other complications (short / long term)?

Ans : Yes, most drugs have some side effects. However, modern anti-hypertensive drugs are extremely safe.

Qn: Will consuming more coffee/tea lead to heart attacks?

Ans : No.

தங்கத்தில் நகைகள் செய்து உடலை அலங்கரிக்கலாம், தெரியும் .பஸ்பமாக சில பணக்காரர்கள் அதை சாப்பிடுவதாக கேள்விபட்டிருக்கிறொம் .

இப்போது 24 காரட் தங்கத்தில் சாப்பாட்டுக்கு பிறகு சாப்பிடும் ' பழக் கலவை ' ( டெசர்ட் ) தயார் . விலை ரூ. 11.65 லட்சம்.அமெரிக்காவின் நியூயார்க் நகரில் உள்ள ஓட்டல், கிராண்ட் ஓபுலன்ஸ் சண்டே,

அதில் இப்போது கோடீஸ்வரர்களைக் கவர வித்தியாசமான மெனு அறிமுகம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது .

அதன் பெயர் ப்ரோஜன் ஹாட் சாக்லேட் . இரவு உணவுக்கு பிறகு சாப்பிடும் பழங்கள் கலந்த டெசர்ட் என்ற ஐட்டம் அது .

அதில் சுவிசர்லாந்தில் இருந்து பெறப்படும் 24 காரட் சுத்தமான திரவ தங்கம் ( சமையலில் பயன்படுத்தக்கூடியது ) சேர்க்கப்படுகிறது .

24 காரட் தங்கத்தால் அலங்கரிக்கப்படுகிறது . ஒரு டெசர்ட் ரூ. 11. 65 லட்சம் . கோடீஸ்வரர்கள் அப்படியே சாப்பிடலாம் .

அன்று கதிர்காமரையும் பீரிசையும் கொண்டு தமிழர் போராட்டத்தை அப்பாவி சிங்களவரை கொன்றொளிக்கும் போராட்டமாக்கி தமிழர்களின் நியாமான போராடதிட்கு தடை விதிக்க அமேரிக்கா பிரதானிய போன்ற நாடுகளை வளைத்து போட்ட குள்ள நரிகள் இன்று புலம் பெயர் தமிழரின் பலத்தின் முன் தம் கனவு ஈடேராது என அறிந்து அணிசேரா நாடுகளை வளைத்து போட்டு தாங்கள் முதாளிளுத்துவ நாடுகளுக்கா எதிராக நிற்பதாக கதை அளகின்றனர்!

இன்று புலம் பெயர் தமிழர் அணிசேரா நாடுகளில் செல்வாக்கு செலுத்த முடியாத நிலைமையில் , இந்தியா மட்டுமே எமது குரலுக்கு வலு சேர்க்க வேண்டும் . அனால் எம்மினத்தை இரு முறை கொன்றோளித்து நிற்கும் இந்தியா அரசின் போக்கை மாற்ற ஒரே பலம் தமிழ் நாடு மட்டுமே!

ஐக்கிய நாடுகளின் விசாரணைக்கு ஆதரவு தெரிவித்து தமிழ் நாடு எங்கும் போராட்டம் நடாத்த வேண்டும். கொழும்பில் சிங்களவர் தெருவுக்கு வந்து போராடும் பொது , புலம் பெயர் அமைப்புகள் ஒன்றும் செய்யாமல் மௌனம் காப்பது பெரும் பின்னடவை தரும் !

தமிழ் நாடு எங்கும் ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபைக்கு ஆதரவு தெரிவித்தும் சிங்கள போர் குற்ற வாளிகளை கூண்டில் ஏற்றவும் போரா ட்டம் வெடிக்கட்டும் ! அரசியல் வேறுபாடின்றி வெடிக்கட்டும் ! திரையுலகமும் குரல் தரட்டும் !

அரசியலுக்கு அப்பாற் பட்டு மனித குலத்துக்கு எதிரான படுகொலைகளை விசாரிக்க குரல் ஒலிக்க வேண்டும்!

புலம் பெயர் நாட்டில் நிச்சயமாய் மக்களின் பேராதரவுடன் விசாரணை குழுவுக்கு ஆதரவு தெரிவித்து குரல் எழுப்ப வேண்டும் !

பிரதானிய தமிழர் அமைப்பு அமைதி காத்தால் , தமிழ் இளையோர் அமையப்பாவது முன் வருமா ?

என்றும் இளையோர் புலம் பெயர் தமிழருக்கு முன்னோடியாக பல போராட்டங்களை செய்து மக்களின் ஆதரவை கடந்த காலங்களில் பெற்று இருந்தனர் ! அதனால் உலகெங்கும் உள்ள தமிழர் அமைப்புகளுக்கும் இளையோர் அமைப்புகளுக்கும் , அமைதியை உடைத்து மக்கள் போரை முன்னெடுக்க வேண்டுகிறோம் !

தக்க தருணங்களில் நாங்கள் அமைதி காத்ததால் பல அழிவுகளை கண்டு விட்டோம் ! இம்முறை அதே தவறை மீண்டும் செய்யவேண்டாம் !

PHP ஒரு கணினி மொழி. இதுவும் இலவச மென்பொருள் ஆகும். PHP ஐ முன்பு பலரும் ஏளனமாக பார்த்த காலம் உண்டு. ஆனால் இப்போது நிலமையே வேறு. இன்றைய கணினி இணையத்திற்கான மென்பொருள் திட்டங்களில் PHP ஜ தெரிவு செய்பவர்களே அதிகமாக உள்ளார்கள். எளிமை, இலவசம், இணைய தளத்தை நிறுவ ஆகும் குறைந்த பொருட்செலவு மற்றும் அந்த மொழியில் கிடைக்கும் மென்பொருட்கள் போன்றவையே இதற்கு காரணங்கள் ஆகும்.

எல்லோராலும் விரம்பப்படும் பேஸ்புக் தளம் இந்த PHP மொழியினால் எழுதப்பட்டது தான்.

*ட்ரூபாலை பன்படுத்த PHP மொழி தெரிந்திருக்க வேண்டுமா?*

தேவையில்லை. கணினி பயனாளராக கொஞ்சம் அனுபவம் போதுமானது. ஒரு சாதாரண தளத்தை இதை வைத்தே நாம்
உருவாக்கிக் கொள்ள முடியும். நாமாகவே ட்ரூபால் நீட்சிகள் ( மாட்யூல்கள் ) எழுத மட்டுமே PHP தெரிந்திருக்கவேண்டும்.

MYSQL

இது ஒரு இலவச தரவுதள மேலாண்மை (Database management) தொகப்பு. ட்ரூபாலானது நமது இணைய தளத்தின் பக்கங்களை எல்லாம் இதில்தான் அட்டவணைப்படுத்தி சேமித்து வைத்திருக்கும்.

இதே கட்டுரையினூடே முக்கிய PHP நிரல்களையும் MYSQL பற்றியும் பார்க்கலாம்.

ட்ரூபால் போலவே பலரால் மிகவும் உபயோகப்படுத்தப்படும் மற்ற இரு தொகுப்புகளாவன வேர்ட் ப்ரஸ்(Word Press) மற்றும் ஜூம்லா (Joomla) ஆகும். அவைகளை பயன்படுத்தி வந்தவர்களுக்கு முதலில் ட்ரூபால் கடினமாக தெரியலாம். ஏனெனில் இது வெறும் CMS போன்று இணைய தளத்திற்காக மட்டுமல்லாமல், பொது நோக்கத்துடன் வடிவமைக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு CMF. ஒருவருக்கு எவ்வாறு ஒரு இணைய தளம் தேவையோ அதே போல ட்ரூபாலை வளைத்து செய்து கொள்ளலாம்.

In futures studies and the history of technology, accelerating change is a perceived increase in the rate of technological (and sometimes social and cultural) progress throughout history, which may suggest faster and more profound change in the future. While many have suggested accelerating change, the popularity of this theory in modern times is closely associated with the ideas and writings of Raymond Kurzweil, especially in relation to his theories about technological singularity.

In 1958, Stanisław Ulam wrote in reference to a conversation with John von Neumann:

One conversation centered on the ever accelerating progress of technology and changes in the mode of human life, which gives the appearance of approaching some essential singularity in the history of the race beyond which human affairs, as we know them, could not continue.

In his book "Mindsteps to the Cosmos" (HarperCollins, August 1983), Gerald S. Hawkins elucidated his notion of 'mindsteps', dramatic and irreversible changes to paradigms or world views. He identified five distinct mindsteps in human history, and the technology that accompanied these "new world views": the invention of imagery, writing, mathematics, printing, the telescope, rocket, computer, radio, TV... "Each one takes the collective mind closer to reality, one stage further along in its understanding of the relation of humans to the cosmos." He noted: "The waiting period between the mindsteps is getting shorter. One can't help noticing the acceleration." Hawkins' empirical 'mindstep equation' quantified this, and gave dates for future mindsteps. The date of the next mindstep (5; the series begins at 0) is given as 2021, with two more successively closer mindsteps, until the limit of the series in 2053. His speculations ventured beyond the technological:

The mindsteps... appear to have certain things in common - a new and unfolding human perspective, related inventions in the area of memes and communications, and a long formulative waiting period before the next mindstep comes along. None of the mindsteps can be said to have been truly anticipated, and most were resisted at the early stages. In looking to the future we may equally be caught unawares. We may have to grapple with the presently inconceivable, with mind-stretching discoveries and concepts.

Mass use of inventions: Years until use by a quarter of US population

Since the late 1970s, others like Alvin Toffler (author of Future Shock), Daniel Bell and John Naisbitt have approached theories of postindustrial societies. They argue the industrial era is coming to an end, and services and information are supplanting industry and goods. Some more extreme visions of the postindustrial society, especially in fiction, envision the elimination of economic scarcity.

Many sociologists and anthropologists have created social theories dealing with social and cultural evolution. Some, like Lewis H. Morgan, Leslie White, and Gerhard Lenski, declare technological progress to be the primary factor driving the development of human civilization.

Morgan's concept of three major stages of social evolution (savagery, barbarism, and civilization) can be divided by technological milestones, like fire, the bow, and pottery in the savage era, domestication of animals, agriculture, and metalworking in the barbarian era and the alphabet and writing in the civilization era.

Instead of specific inventions, White decided that the measure by which to judge the evolution of culture was energy. For White, "the primary function of culture" is to "harness and control energy." White differentiates between five stages of human development: In the first, people use energy of their own muscles. In the second, they use energy of domesticated animals. In the third, they use the energy of plants (agricultural revolution). In the fourth, they learn to use the energy of natural resources: coal, oil, gas. In the fifth, they harness nuclear energy. Craig Brownell suggests that there could be a sixth stage in this series: the utilisation of zero-point vacuum quantum fluctuation energy, for propulsion if not actual power generation. There is much debate over whether Casimir effects can be exploited, however.

US Patents granted, 1870–2005

White introduced a formula P=ET, where E is a measure of energy consumed, and T is the measure of efficiency of technical factors utilizing the energy. In his own words, "culture evolves as the amount of energy harnessed per capita per year is increased, or as the efficiency of the instrumental means of putting the energy to work is increased." The Russian astronomer Nikolai Kardashev extrapolated this theory to create the Kardashev scale, which categorizes the energy use of advanced civilizations. A Dyson sphere is Type II on this scale, and humanity is currently at about 0.72.

Lenski takes a more modern approach and focuses on information. The more information and knowledge (especially allowing the shaping of natural environment) a given society has, the more advanced it is. He identifies four stages of human development, based on advances in the history of communication. In the first stage, information is passed by genes. In the second, when humans gain intelligence, they can learn and pass information by experience. In the third, the humans start using signs and develop logic. In the fourth, they can create symbols, develop language and writing. Advancements in the technology of communication translates into advancements in the economic system and political system, distribution of goods, social inequality and other spheres of social life. He also differentiates societies based on their level of technology, communication and economy: (1) hunters and gatherers, (2) simple agricultural, (3) advanced agricultural, (4) industrial (5) special (like fishing societies).

[edit] Kurzweil and The Law of Accelerating Returns

Kurzweil in his 2001 essay The Law of Accelerating Returns extends Moore's law to describe an exponential growth of technological progress. Moore's law describes an exponential growth pattern in the complexity of integrated semiconductor circuits. Kurzweil extends this to include technologies from far before the integrated circuit to future forms of technology. Whenever a technology approaches some kind of a barrier, according to Kurzweil, a new technology will be invented to allow us to cross that barrier. He cites numerous past examples of this to substantiate his assertions. He predicts that such paradigm shifts have and will continue to become increasingly common, leading to "technological change so rapid and profound it represents a rupture in the fabric of human history." He believes the Law of Accelerating Returns implies that a technological singularity will occur before the end of the 21st century, in 2045.

The essay begins:

An analysis of the history of technology shows that technological change is exponential, contrary to the common-sense 'intuitive linear' view. So we won't experience 100 years of progress in the 21st century—it will be more like 20,000 years of progress (at today's rate). The 'returns,' such as chip speed and cost-effectiveness, also increase exponentially. There's even exponential growth in the rate of exponential growth. Within a few decades, machine intelligence will surpass human intelligence, leading to the Singularity—technological change so rapid and profound it represents a rupture in the fabric of human history. The implications include the merger of biological and nonbiological intelligence, immortal software-based humans, and ultra-high levels of intelligence that expand outward in the universe at the speed of light.

Moore's Law expanded to other technologies

The Law of Accelerating Returns has in many ways altered public perception of Moore's Law. It is a common (but mistaken) belief that Moore's Law makes predictions regarding all forms of technology, when really it only concerns semiconductor circuits. Many futurists still use the term "Moore's Law" to describe ideas like those put forth by Kurzweil and others.

According to Kurzweil, since the beginning of evolution, more complex life forms have been evolving exponentially faster, with shorter and shorter intervals between the emergence of radically new life forms, such as human beings, who have the capacity to engineer (intentionally to design with efficiency) a new trait which replaces relatively blind evolutionary mechanisms of selection for efficiency. By extension, the rate of technical progress amongst humans has also been exponentially increasing, as we discover more effective ways to do things, we also discover more effective ways to learn, i.e. language, numbers, written language, philosophy, scientific method, instruments of observation, tallying devices, mechanical calculators, computers, each of these major advances in our ability to account for information occur increasingly close together. Already within the past sixty years, life in the industrialized world has changed almost beyond recognition except for living memories from the first half of the 20th century. This pattern will culminate in unimaginable technological progress in the 21st century, leading to a singularity. Kurzweil elaborates on his views in his books The Age of Spiritual Machines and The Singularity Is Near.

Some claim the exponential growth of technological progress may become linear or inflected or may begin to flatten into a limited-growth curve. In this model, instead of an overall acceleration of progress, technological advance jumps forward whenever there is a human "buy in" and stalls whenever there is no benefit large enough to profit the technologists. As a result, the sequence of changes never gets steep enough to become a singularity.

Examples of large human "buy-ins" into technology include the computer revolution, as well as massive government projects like the Manhattan Project and the Human Genome Project. The foundation organizing the Methuselah Mouse Prize believes aging research could be the subject of such a massive project if substantial progress is made in slowing or reversing cellular aging in mice.

Both Theodore Modis and Jonathan Huebner have argued—each from different perspectives—that the rate of technological innovation has not only ceased to rise, but is actually now declining. The validity of their conclusions has been criticized by John Smart.^[1]

Choosing technological "milestones", defining the meaning of technological "growth", and similar semantic exercises often include significant subjectivity, and are therefore easily criticized. For example, it can be claimed that inventions are generally created by a fixed population of human inventors at a constant rate, regardless of their current technological prowess, and therefore technological "progress" is actually a function of population growth, not past inventions.

In fact, "technological singularity" is just one of a few singularities detected through the analysis of a number of characteristics of the World System development, for example, with respect to the world population, world GDP, and some other economic indices.^[2] It has been shown^[3] that the hyperbolic pattern of the world demographic, economic, cultural, urbanistic, and technological growth (observed for many centuries, if not millennia prior to the 1970s) could be accounted for by a rather simple mechanism, the nonlinear second order positive feedback, that was shown long ago to generate precisely the hyperbolic growth, known also as the "blow-up regime" (implying just finite-time singularities). In our case this nonlinear second order positive feedback looks as follows: more people – more potential inventors – faster technological growth – the carrying capacity of the Earth grows faster – faster population growth – more people – more potential inventors – faster technological growth, and so on. On the other hand, this research has shown that since the 1970s the World System does not develop hyperbolically any more, its development diverges more and more from the blow-up regime, and at present it is moving "from singularity", rather than "toward singularity".

Juergen Schmidhuber calls the Singularity Omega, referring to Teilhard de Chardin's Omega point (1916). For Omega = 2040 he says the series Omega - 2^n human lifetimes (n<10; one lifetime = 80 years) roughly matches the most important events in human history. But he also questions the validity of such lists, suggesting they just reflect a general rule for "both the individual memory of single humans and the collective memory of entire societies and their history books: constant amounts of memory space get allocated to exponentially larger, adjacent time intervals further and further into the past." He suggests that this may be the reason "why there has never been a shortage of prophets predicting that the end is near - the important events according to one's own view of the past always seem to accelerate exponentially."
